So you’ve decided to tie the knot with your one true love, and now all that’s left to do is actually plan the wedding! DIY weddings have been growing in popularity for years, and it’s not hard to see why. They’re a fantastic way to personalize your big day and reduce your costs at the same time! Here are some of our favourite DIY wedding ideas that allow you to reuse what you already have at home, stay on budget, and amaze your friends and family with your DIY wedding decor.

1. Make your own wedding invitations

Your wedding invitations are the first impression you will make on your guests and can set the tone of your entire wedding. It’s an important first step when planning for the big day as it can direct the theme you choose to carry forward for the day-of festivities. Free DIY wedding invitation templates, nice card stock, envelopes and glue will do the trick. You can make them as simple or fancy as you’d like!

2. Repurpose wooden pallets to make a wedding sign

We’ve all seen wooden pallets lying around–what better way to repurpose them than to create a rustic wedding sign! Whether it lets your guests know where the bathroom is or the schedule of events for the ceremony and reception, these signs will add a fun flare to a wedding in your backyard, or even an indoor reception area. For small projects like painting signs, you can pick up cans of paint for free through our paint reuse program! Check out our collection site locator to find your closest pick-up site.

3. Create your own wedding floral arrangement

Creating your own flower arrangements for your wedding is a huge task, so get ready! Before jumping in, check out this step-by-step guide describing the arranging process, which includes determining the design, vases, supplies you’ll need, and arranging for help from friends or family.

Holding your wedding in a garden or bringing potted flowers to your venue are great ways to reduce waste and give more life to the party. Be careful to not take on too much, and create a realistic timeline for arranging your flowers to ensure less stress on your big day.

4. DIY wedding centrepieces

Your wedding centerpieces deserve attention because they’ll be at the center of attention at the wedding! Depending on the time of year, the theme of your wedding, and where the centerpiece sits, there are many options to choose from.

For a simple bohemian look, consider cut pieces of wood to hold bouquets of flowers, or mason jars filled with candles. If you’re looking for something more unique and practical, a cake stand with small wrapped presents can act as a centerpiece, party favour, and table number all at once!

5. Set up your own wedding lighting

Whether your venue is indoors or outdoors, the lighting will set the mood of your wedding throughout the day and night! Uplighting is an easy way to add colour and excitement to a room, and is super easy to set up – it only takes a few minutes.

A floral chandelier, as featured in our recent post on trending light fixtures, is a beautiful way to tie lighting and flowers together, and could be hung either inside or outside. After lighting up your big day, these floral fixtures are perfect to impress guests at a summer garden party or to brighten up your home. When the bulbs burn out, don’t forget to recycle them at a collection site near you!

6. DIY wedding decorations

There are tons of possibilities for DIY wedding decorations, but a few of our favourites for an outdoor wedding include: a rustic wheelbarrow filled with beer, a wine barrel bar, or a love ladder. A must-have for both indoor and outdoor weddings is a photo booth. You can hire a professional, or create your own! Just create a backdrop, find some fun props, and create a hashtag for your guests to share on social media.

7. Wedding favours

Wedding favours are a way to show your guests you care and to send them home with something thoughtful and unique. It’s your chance to get creative by matching your favours to the theme of your wedding, such as the makings of your signature cocktail served. Another idea we love that’s fun and zero-waste friendly is a favour which can be used past your reception, such as a noisemaker or a pashmina for when it gets chillier in the evening. No matter what you decide to make, remember: this is your parting gift to show your guests how much it meant to you that they took the time and traveled the distance to be there for your most special day.
